We express our gratitude to Donna Pyne, Christine Boyer, Kim Cochran, Jennifer Hawthorne, Linda Hendrickson, Benjamin Joseph, Phuc Pham, Laurie Rauco, Claudia Silva, and Amy Smith. A total of $13,740 in dental procedures was provided, which included exams, x-rays, prophys, fluoride applications, filling of cavities, application of stainless steel crowns, pulpotomies and extractions.
CVIM and Starbucks Host Sealant Saturday
On Saturday February 3, 2007, CVIM proudly hosted Sealant Saturday in their dental clinic to recognize National Children’s Dental Health Month. This initiative provided 50 children who normally would not have access to care with treatments such as dental examinations, sealants, and fluoride varnish applications. Sponsorship from the Pennsylvania Dental Hygiene Association made Sealant Saturday possible. More than 50 volunteers and a generous challenge grant from the Starbucks Corporation helped to make Sealant Saturday a success. Three of CVIM’s volunteer dentists, a nurse, and numerous dental hygienists, dental hygiene students and dental assistants graciously offered their services to help provide approximately $10,000 worth of preventive dental care to children. Additionally, Starbucks donated coffee and hot chocolate for all the volunteers participating and participated themselves by painting faces of the children awaiting treatment.

On May 5, 2006, CVIM collaborated with Chester-Delaware Dental Association, local school nurses, social workers, and public health dental hygienists to host Give Kids a Smile Day. Together with local volunteer dentists, 44 children were treated for $16,000 worth of care at no cost to the patients. Eighteen of these children completed necessary treatment and will be seen at CVIM for maintenance dental work. CVIM's regular volunteer dentists work daily with many of these same children who come into our care at the recommendation of their school public health hygienists who provide preliminary dental screenings. After these initial exams, 30 volunteer dentists and 12 volunteer hygienists at CVIM are able to treat these patients more comprehensively.
CVIM also recently participated in Sealant Saturday. In cooperation with Chester-Delaware County Dental Hygiene Association and many public health dental hygienists, 200 sealants were provided to less fortunate children as well as toothbrushing, flossing, and nutritional education. We hope that this initiative will help in preventing tooth decay that would later necessitate more costly procedures such as tooth extractions, fillings, and root canals.
