RSVP Recognizes a CVIM Volunteer
Phyllis Abbonizio, a volunteer leading the educational activities for children that receive dental care at CVIM on Thursday mornings during the school year, has been recognized as the “RSVP Volunteer of the Year” at its annual 2007 Recognition Luncheon on March 22, 2007 at the Radley Run Country Club.  Phyllis teaches ten to fifteen children weekly for three hours and leads a team of four other volunteers committed to these children while waiting their turns in the dental chair.  The uninsured children are bused weekly to CVIM for dental care and after eight to ten visits the children are transformed.  Phyllis and her team make sure that all children take books home each week and encourage the children to read. Phyllis single-handedly organized a curriculum for these children who range in age from four to fifteen.

Medical Staff at Local Hospital Continue Support
The collective members of the Medical Staff of The Chester County Hospital reaffirmed their allegiance to their community when they presented CVIM with a very generous $25,000 donation.  This donation brings their cumulative giving total to $50,000. "This donation is a meaningful way that we can give back to our community," says Gabriel Ruggerio, D.O. Chief of Staff at the hospital.  "We know that it will be put to good use by staff and volunteers at CVIM.”

APhA Recognizes Susan Shugrue, R.Ph.
The Pharmacy Today One to One Patient Counseling Recognition Program has recognized Susan Shughrue, R. Ph, Director of Drug Dispensing, at CVIM as one of ten winners in the nation.  She is honored as an outstanding pharmacist who has performed exceptional one to one patient counseling, resulting in better health, superior communication, and improved outcomes for patients. She receives an all expense paid trip in March 2007 to attend the three day conference of the American Pharmacists Association Meeting & Expo in Atlanta, GA.  CVIM is very proud of the work that Susan and her team accomplish particularly with our very successful smoking cessation program. Over 112 of our patients have successfully kicked the habit!

Alberta Landis receives 2006 Community Dental Health Award at the Pennsylvanian Annual Dental Hygiene Convention
Alberta Landis, RDH, BS, MS, Director of Dental Services at CVIM, received the Community Dental Health Award.  It is presented annually to an active member of PDHA who exhibits community dental health involvement demonstrated by: volunteering or a public health employee demonstrating exceptional involvement in public health and who has initiated, developed, and established the most innovative community dental health project.

University of The Sciences Honors Susan Shughrue
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia recently honored Susan Shughrue R. Ph., Director of Drug Dispensing at CVIM on November 20, 2006 during a reception held at CVIM.  Ms. Shughrue was selected by students of the University to receive the first "Preceptor of the Year Award" which was recently established to recognize the tremendous commitment that pharmacy preceptors make to assure excellent clinical clerkships for emerging PharmD students during their sixth and final year of their education.  Not only does Ms. Shughrue provide outstanding leadership in her field, she administers, with the student's help, an exemplary smoking cessation program in Chester County.  To date 217 patients have been counseled and 112 patients have quit smoking.  There are currently 40 more patients actively in the program being counseled to stop smoking.  Investing time with our clients clearly makes a difference.

CVIM Dental Assistant Recognized By the OIC
On Friday, October 20, 2006 during an Annual Awards Banquet, LuzMery Winakur received the "Achievers Award" given by the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center.  Ms. Winakur demonstrated leadership, responsibility and language achievement through the English as a Second Language Program and was nominated for this award by Maryann Mann.  CVIM is very proud of our newest dental assistant who is proficient in Spanish and English.

President and CEO receives Citizenship of the Year Award
On September 25, 2006, Helen F. Heidelbaugh was honored at the Chester County Chamber Foundation's Second Annual Awards Luncheon where she received the Steve Pahides Citizenship of the Year Award.

CVIM Awarded Grant from Young Philanthropy Group
On May 24, 2006, CVIM was awarded a $2,200 grant from the “By Girls, For Girls” Advisory Board.  This is a youth philanthropy program for high school girls developed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that selects a worthy organization in the Chester County area.  Chester County Fund for Women and Girls sponsored the event.

Local Boys Scouts Honor Helen F. Heidelbaugh
On April 4, 2006, The Chester County Council Boys Scouts of America honored CVIM’s president and CEO with the Council’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award at its Fifth Annual Recognition event.  The Distinguished Citizen Award Committee recognized Ms. Heidelbaugh as an exemplary model of the leadership skills and the humanitarian efforts that Scouting seeks to instill in its youth membership.  The programs offered by Scouting encourage community involvement, volunteerism, and business leadership as well as philanthropy.  The Chester County Council, Boy Scouts of America serves more than 13,500 youth throughout Chester County. Funds raised from this event will help to fund the Scout Reach Program that will enroll more Spanish-American youth and other culturally diverse boys in the Scout Programs.  In addition, the program will help to identify future leaders for these groups.

CVIM Receives Humanitarian Award
On March 2, 2006 at the Second District Valley Forge Dental Association presented the 2006 Humanitarian Award to CVIM.  This award is presented to an organization/individual that exemplifies untiring devotion to the welfare of humanity and outstanding contributions to the community.  Dr. Bernadette Logan, corresponding secretary of the Chester-Delaware Dental Society presented this award to Helen F. Heidelbaugh, president and CEO and Alberta D. Landis, RDH, director of dental services for CVIM.

CVIM Receives Grant from the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls
In January 2006, CVIM was the recipient of a generous $6,000 grant from the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls to support dental care for uninsured Latino women and girls.  CVIM has applied for and has received this grant over the past six years, which has enabled CVIM to enhance self-esteem for many young Latino women and girls, and in some cases, women have moved on to better employment.

March of Dimes Honors Jody Hill, RN, CRNP
Ms. Hill, vice president of patient care services at CVIM was honored by the Chester County March of Dimes on October 20, 2005 at its annual Women of Achievement Program. Jody was recognized for her outstanding contributions in the field of health care, particularly the uninsured people of Chester County, and her tireless efforts in support of the Latino population.  She recently started a Girl Scout Troop in Kennett Square for young Latino girls.

Youth Philanthropy Program Benefits CVIM
On June 24, 2005, representatives of the Great Valley High School Youth in Philanthropy Program presented one of three grant awards to CVIM.  The generous gift of $1,200 will be applied to the dental program for youth.  The pilot program was an extra-curricular activity co-sponsored by the Great Valley School District and the Chester County Community Foundation.

CVIM Receives the GSK Global Impact Award
CVIM was honored on March 10, 2004 by GlaxoSmithKline. The Global Community Partnership IMPACT Award is given to 10 non-profit organizations in the Delaware Valley that are making a significant difference in their respective communities. The grant award of $40,000 has been used by CVIM to advance its bilingual health and nutrition education program for our patients. There has been great emphasis placed on meeting the needs of our low literacy population-particularly the diabetic patient. Wheels of Wellness nominated CVIM for this outstanding award. Non-profits must be in business a minimum of five years in order to be eligible for this award.

CVIM Staff Honored
On March 10, 2003, Mary B. Wirshup, M.D. Jody Hill, R.N., C.R.N.P., and Judith Atticks, R.N. were honored by the Brandywine Division of the National Association of Social Workers. Each honoree received the Public Citizen of the Year Award for 2003. The recognition took place at the West Chester University, Sykes Auditorium.

CVIM Receives Statewide Recognition
On November 8, 2002 in Harrisburg, the Highmark Foundation awarded CVIM with $25,000 to support its development and improvement.  Highmark Foundation Excellence in Service Awards were presented at the third annual Free Clinic Association of Pennsylvania (FCAP) Conference sponsored by the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

CVIM Awarded Susan G. Komen Breast Foundation Grant
The Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Foundation awarded CVIM with a $20,000 grant to assist with diagnostic studies needed for uninsured women that have abnormal mammograms.  CVIM is one of 18 nonprofit institutions receiving a grant through the Philadelphia Affiliate during the 2002/2003 year.  Out of every 35 women screened at CVIM, five to eight women need follow up diagnostics to confirm or rule out breast cancer.

President and CEO Honored
On September 28, 2000, the March of Dimes and the Chester County Chamber of Business & Industry honored Helen F. Heidelbaugh, RN at their “Salute to Chester County Women of Achievement” banquet.  Helen received the 2000 Honoree in the Field of Health award.
